Bog Child

By Siobhan Dowd

Published 2008.

I enjoy Irish writing and this story did not disappoint me.  This title is classified for Young Adults, however many Adults would perhaps have a better understanding of the political turmoil during this period where bombings, protests, hunger strikes and death were part of everyday life in Ireland.

Set in Ireland near the North-South border in the 1980’s The Bog Child is an exceptional novel that explores the concessions made in the name of peace.

Fergus is 18, and in his last year of school, he is studying hard to achieve high results in his end of year exams as his ambition is to be accepted into University and become a Doctor.

During this period Fergus has many dramatic events to contend with.

As Fergus tries to make sense of the mad world around him – his brother on hunger-strike in prison, the body of a child in the bog and the strong feelings building for Coro.

This story is funny, sad and uplifting.
