Variegated thistle in the County gets a reprieve - and pigs get their own bylaw.

The work diary of Harold Richardson, County Clerk, Rangitikei County Council:

 

Harold Hastings Richardson, 1872-1944 was appointed County Clerk in 1893, and he continued in that role until his death, 51 years later.

 

 

Monday, 24 September 1934

 

Dukeson* and Fowler* in office.

 

Stevenson rang up re contract.

 

Prepared notices re rates arrears.

 

Prepared of draft of statement for balance sheet of reserves and real estate and rents.

 

Office staff preparing work for meeting.

 

Left office 4 pm for Bulls.

 

Office in evening until 9.30 pm. 

 

 

Tuesday, 25 September 1934

 

Mair in in the forenoon going through accounts.  He and Dukeson left for Turakina in the afternoon.

 

 

Wednesday, 26 September 1934

Thursday, 27 September 1934

 

Mair in office. 

 

Dukeson went [to] W[ellin]gton to see Mrs Dukeson on board steamer for Australia.

 

Busy day on accounts etc.

 

Chairman did not come in. 

 

Councillor Doole called in the afternoon.

 

Office in evening.

 

Stevenson’s contractor in office in the afternoon to interview Mair. 

 

Mr E L Briant died. 

 

 

Friday, 28 September 1934

 

Council meeting – all present and large amount of business.

 

Deputation re variegated thistle and Council decided not to declare [it] a noxious weed. 

 

Special meeting passed bylaws re pigs.

 

Statutory meeting decided [to] make no alterations [to] ridings or representations. 

 

Office in evening.

 

Mr E L Briant’s funeral, and some Councillors left early to attend.

 

 

Saturday, 29 September 1934

 

Busy morning cleaning up work from meeting etc.

*Sydney Mair was County Engineer, retiring 1947.  He began his employment with the County in 1899.

*Richard Dukeson was the County’s Overseer in the Southern part of the District

*G F Robinson, Kakariki Plant Manager

*Ken Waring Dalrymple was County Chairman 1929-1950.  He was first elected to the County in 1917.
