No. All borrowing (whether a book, magazine, CD, DVD or tape) for an initial three-week period is free. Renewal charges apply after that, as do overdue charges.
Charges for Internet use remain unchanged. Free use of library computers for word-processing is limited to one hour per month. After that charges apply.
There continues to be no charge for borrowing the "talking books" (tapes or CDs) made available by the National Library for the sight-impaired.
No. Anyone living in the Rangitikei is entitled to register as a library borrower and receive a borrower's card without charge.
Yes. You may not have more than ten items out at any one time. This limit relates to an individual, not a family - and everyone is able to have their own card. If you are using one card for your family, this is a good time for each person to get their own card.
The Council wants to see the maximum use made of the material in the library collections. Having charges after three weeks is an encouragement to get books, magazines etc, back into the libraries so that other people can borrow them.
Please ask. The book, magazine, CD etc. may be in the stack, being mended, at one of the other libraries, or borrowed by somebody else. You can place a reserve on any such book - at no charge if the book is on the shelves at another library; or at $1 if the book is out to another borrower.
You can also arrange to borrow a book from a library outside the Rangitikei. The usual fee for this interloan service is $5, but it can be more depending on the charges set in the other library. Library staff will get these details and check with you before confirming the loan request. And you can also suggest that a particular book is purchased for the libraries.
New adult fiction and non-fiction books are distributed across the three libraries and displayed for a week before they can be borrowed. During that time you may place a reserve on any book (at $1 per book), which means you get it sooner. Large print books and children's books go straight on the shelves for immediate borrowing.
There are no restrictions. So, school students needing to use adult non-fiction books for schoolwork may take them out, and adults wanting to take out picture books to read to their young children are free to do so.
At present the EPIC databases are hosted through a National Library website, so Internet charges apply. When the library website is operational, you will be able to access EPIC in the libraries without charge. EPIC will continue to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through any computer having an Internet connection.
An increase in the number of items borrowed and a longer borrowing term is available for teachers wanting to use books in a classroom. The same applies to any adult who provides home schooling for children. This borrowing is recorded on a special card, distinct from personal borrowing by teachers for recreational reading or to improve knowledge on a topic.
Overdue charges of 20c a day apply immediately after the three-week borrowing period is over. If your books, magazines, CDs etc are more than a week overdue, we post or email you an overdue notice.
If you have not finished a book when it is due back, or are not able to get into the library to return it, it is up to you whether you renew the book etc for a further three week period (for $1.00) or pay the overdue charge of 20c per day. You cannot renew a book if someone else has reserved it.
